Make Your Own Raffia Basket
With Sally Holliday
10am-4pm Sunday 1 August 2021
$115 per person
Includes all materials. Bring a drink and something for lunch, and wear closed shoes. Participants may choose to bring their own scissors; please ensure they are labelled with your name.
In this introductory workshop, you’ll learn the basics of basket weaving whilst working with raffia (a natural fibre). Over the course of the day, we’ll move through the following phases, acquiring skills as we go:
- beginning your basket with a starter circle
- forming a base with coiling technique
- building and shaping your basket to give it form and function
- finishing-off your basket with some special touches
Your starter kit includes a tapestry needle and a mix of plain and coloured raffia. I look forward to sharing my love of basket weaving with you!
About Sally Holliday
Sally Holliday is a mixed media artist and creative facilitator living in Gungahlin. She adopts a playful approach to the making process, experimenting with a broad range of materials. Having worked primarily in collage and assembly techniques, Sally made a departure from these in 2019 when she discovered the art of basket weaving. She has since immersed herself in this modality, appreciating its meditative qualities. Her most recent body of work, Way Finding (inspired by the Mulanggari Grasslands), was shown at the Celebrate Gungahlin Festival. As an arts enabler, Sally enjoys companioning others on their own creative journeys.
