Chainmail basics

with Katy Goddard

An Infuse: Artists Strengthening Communities session

Made possible by our wonderful Infuse patrons – become one today.

12-3pm Saturday 30 July 2022

Free, but bookings essential

Under the guidance of experienced mail creator Katy Goddard, this 3 hour workshop session will allow you to play with various links and materials and investigate the art of chainmail. You will be guided to make a simple piece of chainmail, or you may wish to discuss a bigger idea you have. You will have the opportunity to play and see what comes from the materials in front of you. Alternatively through making a set piece of jewellery you can get started with the basic skills to work on bigger ideas in the future. You are welcome to bring along your own reclaimed items which you may wish to incorporate into your design. The workshop will be relaxed and have a flexible format, allowing you to work at your own pace and bring a small piece of work to realisation on the day. Create a piece of chainmail, wearable or otherwise whilst gaining the basic skills to take your linking ideas further.

About Katy Goddard

Katy Goddard has been making mail from various materials for nearly thirty years. A love of reuse and design melded when playing with reclaimed materials and Industria Design was born. Katy has created a wide range of chainmail pieces for opera, theatre, film, commercial work and for individuals. Katy graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in Canberra in 1992 and then worked extensively in costume and design in Sydney for nearly twenty years. A focus on reuse and design has been a feature of Katy’s work life and creativity, and she considers herself lucky to have combined the two, allowing her to be a strong promoter of reuse in the arts. She has facilitated workshops both in Sydney and the Far South Coast of NSW where she now lives.
